Malmquist, Allen (March 1941 - April 8, 2024)
Born in San Francisco in 1941, Allen grew up in Palo Alto. Interested in the outdoors and photography, in 1963 he solo backpacked his 8 X 10 box camera into western Grand Canyon. Drafted later that year, he served two years in the Army in Alaska and on discharge became a seasonal interpretation Ranger at Pipe Springs National Monument. Allen had a pet coyote named Rusty, recorded bird sightings for Marybeth Riffey, and had adventures on the Arizona Strip. He recounts his very successful pack-your-solid-waste-out program on Lake Powell and his building stabilization work at Lees Ferry. This is a 23-part Interview. Only Part 4 is transcribed yet. Chester "Chet" and Genavieve Bundy named their 13th child Bonnie. She was born in 1946 on the Arizona Strip at Mt. Trumbull. Bonnie recalls growing up on the Strip as a wonderful childhood full of horseback riding, racing, and breaking as well as schooling in the one room Mount Trumble schoolhouse. Bonnie helped Chet run a gas station for River runners at Whitmore Wash and Bonnie got to do a few river trips with her dad and Georgie White. This 5-part interview has not been transcribed yet.

After growing up in rural Oklahoma, Ronnie Mac finished high school and immediately joined the apprentice ironworker program. He worked in a bolt up crew, raising gang, and connector crew. Ronnie worked for John F. Beasley Construction Company building bridges. When Beasley's Bridge Division sold to Traylor Brothers in the early 1990’s, Ronnie followed the work. Traylor was the erection subcontractor for the second Navajo Bridge and Ronnie worked as the radio man between the crane operator and the raising gang. Over the next 12 years Andy became very comfortable working 165 ton American 9299 crawler cranes. During this time he worked with ironworker David Meche. When David was born in 1959, his father was an ironworker building the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge. Dave joined the local union in 1978 and worked raising gangs from Coast to Coast. David worked with legendary ironworker Ed Kent on the Greater New Orleans Bridge. In 1994 on the erection of the second Navajo Bridge, Ed made sure David was hired as the raising gang foreman. Mille recounts the boating exploits of her father, Bill Davis, and how she boated from Phantom Ranch to Hemenway Harbor with him in 1950 with Frank Wright, Jim Rigg, Pat and Susie Reilly, and others. On that river trip they recovered Ed Hudson’s boat ESMERALDA II at Forster Canyon. Millie is credited with being the first woman on record to row a rubber raft through Lodore Canyon in 1952. In August 2022, jet boat experts Paul Mullan of New Zealand and his Australian wife Robin visited with Kim Besom at Grand Canyon National Park to see the Turbocraft Jet 35 jet boats Wee Red and Dock. They were used in 1960 to uprun the Colorado River in Grand Canyon. Paul had seen the Wee Red with Jon Hamilton some years earlier and recounts that visit. When the handheld recorder’s battery’s get too low, this recording ends abruptly. This interview has not been transcribed yet.
