Jim was born in Queens near New York City in 1954. His father worked for IBM and the family moved a lot as Jim was growing up. During that time Jim developed very strong route-finding skills in outdoor activities like hiking, camping and canoeing. When he resigned from IBM, the family moved to Scottsdale, Arizona and Jim discovered what would become a lifelong passion, hiking in Grand Canyon. This 35-part series covers close to 50 years of Grand Canyon hiking involving foot travel over thousands of miles below the Rim. This series has not been completely transcribed yet.

After learning to pack mules in an amazing series of events, Richard landed a job as Trail Crew Foreman at Grand Canyon National Park. He transferred to Olympic National Park, then moved to Hawaii and worked for the National Park Service all across the Pacific Ocean. This is a 10 Part interview.

Hawkins, Ken
Born in 1944 at Upland, CA, ken recalls overnight camp-outs in Topock Gorge on the Colorado River with his parents and two siblings in their canoe. His Aunt was good friends with Secretary of Interior Udall. Ken received a letter from the National Park Service in the spring of 1964, offering him a job as a GS 2 Fire Control Aid at Teaton National Park. Ken accepted, knowing he was a political appointee! This interview is underway and has not been transcribed yet.

Hay, Don
Don recalls a Glen Canyon River Trip in 1954. He was 16-years-old at the time. Another participant on that trip was Gus Scott. Hildreth, Wes (August 17, 1938 - June 19, 2025) and Brown, Nancy and Fulton, Jack
In 1968 while Nancy provided logistical support, Wes Hildreth and Jack Fulton hiked from Havasu Canyon upriver to the Bright Angel Trail. After a trip to the General Store and a night in the Bright Angel Hotel, they hiked back to the Tonto and on east, eventually climbing out Salt Trail Canyon.. In 1969, Wes and Nancy ran the Colorado River in Grand Canyon with Dock Martson.

Hilleke Family
The Hilleke family consists of Polly, Tommy, and their four boys, 14-year-old Kelly, 13-year-old Daniel, 11-year-old Dax, and 10-year-old Bodie. In October of 2020 the family kayaked the entire length of the Colorado River in Grand Canyon. Bodie became the youngest person on record to paddle a kayak from Lees Ferry to Pearce Ferry. This could be two new river firsts: Four brothers younger than 15 paddling the entire Grand Canyon together and is the first time Pearce Ferry Rapid was kayaked by four brothers younger than 15. Dickson "Dick" Hingson recounts working for five summers at the North Rim Lodge beginning in 1958. Jen was hiking and scrambling in the desert as a small child. In the Airforce, Jen served in the Nuclear Security Forces then completed a graduate degree before joining the National Park Service. Jen completed a sectional hike all the way through Grand Canyon in 2017 and in 2021 Jen became the first recorded female to walk the length of Grand Canyon from lees Ferry to Pearce Ferry alone. This oral history has not been transcribed yet.

Born in 1928, Ellen grew up near 1st and Speedway in Tucson, Arizona. When a senior going to Tucson High School, she started taking flying lessons. One of her instructors was a handsome veteran who flew B-24 and B-29's in the war. Five years older than her, he gave her a ride home on his Indian motorcycle. On their first date, they flew to the Grand Canyon and back. they only got a little lost on the flight. His name was Henry and they married in 1946. This is an 11 part series that has not been transcribed yet.

Mark was riding his 1919 Henderson motorcycle doing his best to retrace the treadmarks of C.K. Shepherd, a WWI aviator making the same journey in 1919. After spending time in Flagstaff, C.K. rode his Henderson to the Grand Canyon and back following the Moqui Stage Route. This oral history is not transcribed yet.

Peter thought nothing of hitchhiking 100 miles to see fossils at the New Jersey State Museum when he was 12. At that time he was also the mechanic at his family’s farm. Peter became interested in historical currency and caving. He would eventually become an expert in both. His family moved to Tucson in 1959. He enrolled at the U of A and during the 1960 Easter break, He and other cavers including George Beck explored Thunder River Cave in Grand Canyon. Peter would eventually map the geology of Grand Canyon and Canyonlands with George Billingsley. This interview series has not been transcribed yet.
